Respecting tradition, but keeping an eye on the future

Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts trains the stage artists of tomorrow in an environment at the core of which are art and learning. The goal is to train creative, constructive and independent actors and mime artists. The Academy aims at moving forward, in dialogue with the surrounding community, and with its students, thus remaining an open, ever-changing place of higher education – a drama school to which people apply in order to mature in both human and artistic terms.

Training for the stage was initiated in Sweden as long ago as 1787, by the king, Gustav III; the training was linked to Sweden’s national Royal Dramatic Theatre.  In 1960 the will to establish a broader foundation from which students could acquire and develop knowledge of acting, without their being required to take part in Royal Dramatic Theatre productions, resulted in a government decision to sever the drama school from the Royal Dramatic Theatre. The new drama school would later be known as the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts, an independent higher-education college, now a Swedish Ministry of Education institute.

Today, the Academy has a total of a hundred students a year on its courses and training programmes. In June 2008, operations moved to 4800 square feet of renovated floor space at Valhallavägen 193 in Stockholm, to premises at which students and staff can meet the challenges of the future with curiosity and humility – challenges in art and learning.

Our operations

The Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts trains students in practical acting and practical mime, at basic level and advanced level. The Academy also
runs courses and programmes in artistic and pedagogical development work.

Basic level

The Academy runs two educational programmes at basic level: one in practical acting and one – the only one of its kind in the Nordic countries – in practical miming. A completed programme renders the student a B.A.  The Academy accepts eight to ten students a year for the acting programme; students are accepted for the mime programme once every three or four years.

Advanced level

An M.A can be acquired following a B.A. The Academy offers one or more masters programmes with varying thematic profiles.

Courses

Every year, the academy runs courses of varying duration; they vary, too, in content and theme and are available to both new and established actors and mime artists.

Commissioned education

Commissioned education is training commissioned by external bodies – corporate and other organisations and public authorities etc. We offer training within our specific sphere of knowledge: dramatic communication which, in recent years, has underlined presence, relaxation and presentation.
